Excavator Coupling Types

There are many parts in an excavator. They are the engine, hydraulic pump, upperstructure, undercarriage and the attachment.

The important parts are the engine and the hydraulic system. A coupling is a component that links the engine and the hydraulic pump. It transfers the power from the engine to the hydraulic pump.

There are many excavator coupling types. They have different abilities and features. Due to the industrial design and the cost consideration, different excavators use different kinds of the couplings.

The couplings that are used on the excavators can is classified as the following types:

1.flexible rubber couplings

2.rigid flange couplings

3.iron dampers

4.clutches

5.CB & TFC series

1. Flexible Rubber Couplings

Early excavators generally used flexible rubber couplings. The bigger advantage of Flexible rubber couplings is the strong buffering capacity. The flexible rubber couplings have low motion noise when the engine transmits power to the hydraulic pump. But one obvious disadvantage of flexible rubber couplings is that they are not as oil resistant as other types of couplings. Therefore, when the machine is equipped with flexible rubber coupling, it must be ensured that the machine does not leak oil, otherwise, the service life of the coupling will be greatly reduced.

2. Rigid Flange Couplings

Nowadays many excavators (especially Chinese brand excavators) are increasingly using rigid flange couplings. The advantages of rigid flange couplings are that they are easy to disassemble and install, and the design of rigid flange couplings is shorter than flexible rubber couplings, which is more economical in the machine space. Due to the easy installation and disassembly of rigid flange couplings, the maintenance cost of the excavator is greatly reduced. Therefore, more and more excavator industrial design companies and customers are willing to use rigid flange couplings.

3. Iron dampers & clutches

As far as the current situation is concerned, Komatsu company prefers to use the iron dampers and clutches when designing excavators. Especially iron dampers, all iron dampers currently on sale are used on Komatsu excavators. These models include PC60, PC100, PC120, PC130, etc. And clutches, many 20t, 30t, 40t Komatsu excavators are in use, such as PC200-3, PC200-5, PC200-6, PC200-7, PC200-8, PC300-6, PC300-7, PC400-6, PC400-7, etc. There are also a small number of other brands of excavators that use clutch as the transmission buffer element, such as Hyundai R445, Volvo 360, Liebherr R934, R944 models.

4. CB & TFC series

The most obvious feature of the CB & TFC series is that the rubber block and the center spline are integrated. This type of coupling does not require additional installation of rubber blocks and splines. When installing the coupling to the excavator, just install the coupling directly on the hydraulic pump. Since this coupling is one piece, there is no force imbalance during machine motion after installation. Generally, the excavators that use this type of coupling are small excavators, such as Kubota excavators and Yanmar excavators. These excavators are generally excavators under 10 tons.
